Since 1965 our Department offers to undergraduate students from all over Brazil, a summer course in Physiology. The idea behind this event is to provide interested students with a theoretical up to date view of systems and cellular physiology and the possibility of practical training in one of our laboratories. The course is scheduled to last two weeks, with a daily one hour morning lecture, given by one of our PhD students, and the rest of the day spent in a hands on short project developed in a lab previously chosen by the student. The course serves a double purpose: 1) to spread the concepts of physiology and 2) to attract students for a future career in physiology.
Starting in 2009 we opened the course to middle level students chosen from one of the city public schools. This is a relatively new experience but with highly promising results in the sense of bringing science to the general public and making youngsters interested in the academia. It also serves the purpose of showing the students the work done in Brazilian public universities and their role in developing the country.
